Watson-Lockley Photographic Collection
Stellebosch University has allowed Ancestry24 to make available to our users “The Watson-Lockley Photographic Collection”. This collection consists of 30 000 photographic glass negatives and it is one of the most important collections housed in the Stellenbosch University Archives. Many of these photographs are from the 1900′s.These images can be searched or browsed on Ancestry24 for FREE.
Should you wish to order black and white photographs you can order them directly from Stellenbosch University for a nominal fee.
To order the photo click on the image with the right mouse button and choose the option “View Image info” then look at the Location e.g. https://ancestry24.co.za/wp-content/gallery/watson-lockley-collection/00851.jpg and the file name which is the last part of the url after the last backslash / is the name of the image you need to order or click on the “Order hi-res image here” option.
JH Watson was a prominent photographer at Stellenbosch. He set up business in Stellenbosch in 1873 and his collection of photographic negatives visually reflects academic and social life of the University of Stellenbosch and its predecessors – as well as the Stellenbosch community at large. In 1927 Colin Lockley took over the studio and sold it to Cor Langenberg in 1960. The University acquired the glass negative collection in the 1980′s.
After moving around between the University Library and Museum, the collection was deposited in the University Archives in 1996. As the number on the negatives corresponds with an entry in journal - stating the date the photograph was taken and supplemented by the name of the person or subject, address the photograph was sent to and other details – the negatives have intrinsic historical value.

Unfortunately there is no landing page for this collection. Type in the name and surname or Initial and surname you are looking for then click onthe IMAGES button on the left hand side of the screen and scroll through the list of images.

Is there anyway we could scroll through these pics. My G.Grandfather was the rector of St Mary’s Stellenbosch at that time and thus would be of a great interst to me.

All the images are named and you can only type in the name you are looking for, then click search, then click on images on the left hand side of the screen to filter the images and the images will appear. What was his name?
