AncestrybyDNA Testing

Do you want to discover more about your ancestors and ultimately, what makes you uniquely you? Uncover your full ancestry mix through this exciting and unique new test, AncestrybyDNA™.

How does the test work?

Your DNA contains information on your family’s history. The AncestrybyDNA™ test reveals your family’s history, detailing where your ancestors originated from.

The ancient world had large numbers of migrations — modern humans originated in East Africa roughly 200,000 years ago, and moved through the Fertile Crescent in the Middle East to populate Europe, Asia, and the rest of the world. We’re the creation of both ancient and recent migrations. You can learn about these influences through the AncestrybyDNA™ test, offered in partnership with DNA Diagnostics Centre in the UK.

The AncestrybyDNA™ test analyses 176 locations in your DNA to establish your biogeographical profile. It details how much of the four founding populations can be found in your own DNA, listing percentages for European, East Asian, Sub-Saharan African, and Native American. These are defined as:

  • European: includes Europeans, South Asians and Middle Easterners
  • East Asian: includes the Chinese, Koreans, Japanese and Islands from the Pacific region.
  • African: includes people with roots in the Sub-Saharan area of Africa.
  • Native American: comprises of people who migrated to occupy North, South and Central America.

This page does not explain if the test contains Paternal, Maternal or both DNA tests. I would guess both, but its a lot of money to spend on a guess.

Hi, which is the most comprehensive of the three tests? Judging by the price I would think that it is “Ancestry by DNA Test”. Is this correct and if so is it necessary to have the other two tests (namely: “Maternal” and “Paternal” Lineage)done?

I look forward to hearing from you.

      Hi Lynne

AncestrybyDNA – this will give you a breakdown of your racial profile. Europe, Native American, Asian and African are the four main population groups and this will clarify in % terms what the you are made up of. This is a good choice if you have no idea of yout background, who are mixed race and used by those that are adopted or have heard a rumour that many generations ago there was an asian/african/american/european influence in your family.

Maternal/Paternal Lineage Tests – these tests will determine either your mothers or fathers side of the family, where their ancestors originated from, travelled and migrated too before eventually settling. We can determine their haplogroup, their migration route and their history which can go back 25-35,000 years ago.

The lineage tests are much more popular in Europe, the AncestrybyDNA is the leading ancestry product because of more commonly mixed groups

    Hi Heather

Has anyone ever tried to photograph the old Burgersdorp cemetery? I believe all the records were destroyed by a fire. I would love to find out, as my ancestor was buried there, and I don’t know where to look, as the grave stones are badly damaged.

    Regards
    Riette

    Hi

Would it be possible to see a sample of these test results?

How accurate is it? What exactly can it tell?

    • Heather MacAlister April 24, 2012 at 6:03 pm #

      Hi there
Thanks for your message. DNA test results can be seen on our DNA pages https://ancestry24.co.za/discover-your-ancient-roots-with-dna-testing/ -you need to click on SEE MORE to view the samples.
With regards to the accuracy we run each DNA test twice—when we receive your samples, we record their arrivals and immediately divide them into two for our unique Dual Process™. DDC. This proprietary process ensures DDC clients receive the highest accuracy of testing available today. Each step performed by a biotechnology specialist and by one of our advanced Biomek® robotics systems, is carefully recorded and performed in parallel using the two independent samples. At the end of the DNA test, one of our PhDs or MDs compares the results to verify that they match. This stringent process helps to rule out false results in the rare instances that samples become compromised. Together with our use of robots in most of the sample preparation steps, it eliminates the possibility of human errors such as sample switching and/or cross-contamination.

We are able to run extended tests in difficult situations to guarantee accuracy. Every case is unique, and our experienced technical staff is prepared to perform extended testing and analysis in cases with unusual results due to genetic mutation or other unique hereditary situations. We have the largest human identity database in the private industry which enables us to do extensive statistical analyses, ensuring accurate results.

Our DNA pages explains exactly what you will get only the AncestryByDNA does not give the haplogroup but instead a percentage of where your DNA orginally derives from.
      regards
      Heather

Hi heather, If I do the Paternal lineage test, can I get results for my both my paternal grandparents? Do you recommend the the normal DNA with paternal? or does the latter suffice? Thanks
    Jose

      Hi There
Unfortunately a woman cannot take a paternal DNA test. If you have a brother that shares the same father or your father is still alive then they would be the people to have the Paternal DNA test done.
      hope this helps?
      regards
      Heather

Why are the tests so expensive?

    • Heather MacAlister November 11, 2012 at 4:02 pm #

Our DNA testing is done by one of the top laboratorie in the UK. Your test kit is couriered by DHL express to your home and then to the UK. All those costs needed to be involved. If you can find cheaper testing please feel free to use them.
      Kind regards

    Dear Vivienne
Thank you for your email. Firstly we have no association whatsoever with Ancestry.com so we cannot compare with what they do.
2ndly DNA tests are more expensive here as their are not as many people who want it done.
Lastly we are no longer under taking DNA testing because of the lack of interest so you can choose any of the other overseas options.
    Kind regards
    Heather
