Africa General Service Medal

In 1902 the British government instituted a medal to commemorate numerous small campaigns in various parts of West and East Africa; 4 bars were issued. One of these, SOMALILAND 1902-04, is of particular South African significance. Among those who qualified for this were the members of the Somaliland Burgher Corps who served between Nov. 1902 and April 1904 against the ‘Mad Mullah’ in Somaliland. The Somaliland Burgher Corps was a small unit of about a hundred men who were recruited in the Transvaal and Orange Free State immediately after the Second Anglo-Boer War. It has the distinction of having been the first South African unit ever to serve beyond the borders of Southern Africa.
