Athlone is a residential area on the Cape Flats within the municipal area of Cape Town and in the magisterial district of Wynberg.  At first it was called West London, then Milner, after Sir Alfred Milner, and eventually it was renamed after the Earl of Athlone, Governor-General of the Union. It is a large housing complex comprising, inter alia, Bokmakierie, Sunnyside, Alicedale, Kew Town, Silvertown, Bridgetown, Gleemoor, Garlandale, Belthorn, Hazendal, and the Indian area Rylands. To meet the constant demand for more houses, new housing schemes have been undertaken at Bonteheuwel, Kalksteenfontein, Heideveld, Manenberg and Vanguard; 7,604 houses had been built by the end of 1966. The estimated population in 1966 of the entire complex was 65,000.
In the third decade of the 20th century a start was made with the teaching of Coloured blind children at the Athlone School for the Blind.
One of the largest power stations in the Cape Province was commission in 1961 was the Athlone  Power Station as well as a large sewerage plant. There was also a well known Teachers Training College in Athlone. In 1929 the Heatherdale Children’s Home was established
